Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, was born on 21 July 1948 in London, England. His parents were Greek-Cypriot and Swedish. He was a precocious child with a great love of music. At the age of eleven, he wrote his first song called “I Love My Dog” which remained an important part of his career.
His musical career began in 1966 when he signed with the Deram label and released an album titled “Matthew & Son”. His early singles, such as “I Love My Dog” and “Here Comes My Baby”, were successful both commercially and critically, giving him a strong start in the music business. He followed this success with his second album, “New Masters”, which further increased his popularity.
In the late 1960s, Cat Stevens became a sensation in England with hits like “Wild World” and “Peace Train”. His albums Tea for the Tillerman (1970) and Teaser and the Firecat (1971) were extremely popular, with many of the songs becoming classics. His popularity peaked in the early 1970s with albums like Catch Bull at Four (1972) and Foreigner (1973).
In 1977, Yusuf Islam converted to Islam and changed his name from Cat Stevens to Yusuf Islam. He left the music industry for many years and devoted himself to charitable works in support of Muslim causes. In 2006, he released his first album of original songs in 28 years, titled “An Other Cup”. The album was well received and Yusuf Islam continues to perform live concerts around the world. He has been awarded many honors throughout his career, such as an honorary doctorate from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2010.
